As you might have heard, I had the pleasure of being joined by my old friend, legendary wrestling promoter (and pop culture maestro) Paul Heyman on the dais at the Top Cow panel at San Diego Comic Con this past Saturday, where we announced the very first GeekWeek.com exclusive gaming project.
This project - currently untitled - has been in the works for several months and is a personal passion project of mine, so I couldn't be happier to finally let the cat out of the bag. As such, I'd like to take a brief moment to tell you a little bit more about the game and our plans for incorporating it into the site.
The premise is simple - Paul Heyman has teamed with GeekWeek to found a new online fighting league featuring a hybrid of pro wrestling, mixed martial arts and boxing. It's classic turn based online fighting, bringing combat sports into the era of community-driven games like Mafia Wars and Farmville. Players will be able to create their own custom fighters in any discipline, leading their character from the bottom of the rankings all the way to championship gold. With each victory comes further customization, moves, attributes and unlockable features. As an added bonus, users will also be able to play mixed matches, pitting wrestlers against MMA stars, MMA stars against boxers and so on. The thinking here is that one ring + three disciplines = endless dream matches.
Best of all, the basic game itself will be totally free here on GeekWeek.com.
The creative touch of Paul Heyman will be apparent beyond his role as "commissioner" of this new online league. Downloaded content featuring a host of star performers - past, present and future - from the worlds of wrestling, MMA and boxing will be available for purchase weekly as you fully customize your own roster of fighting athletes and modify your created fighters. Paul has been an active partner in this area and we've already got several names on board and continue conversations with a host of parties from around the sports and entertainment worlds. Best of all, a significant portion of each downloaded fighter purchase will go directly to that fighter or his estate, ensuring that these warriors and their families continue to benefit from their blood, sweat and sacrifice.
Our game developer is locked in and we have plans to bring the game to the obvious social networking platforms as well as smart phones after it debuts exclusively on GeekWeek during the 4th quarter of this year. I will be talking further about the game during this weeks episode of GeekWeek Live, which airs at 4pm PST this coming Thursday at http://www.geekweek.com/live.html. Feel free to stop by and hit us with any of your questions or suggestions. This is a game being designed by fans for fans, so please don't hesitate to let us know the fighters and features you crave most. My goal is to create a real community for fight fans inside the game and I will strive to be as accessible as possible during our production and launch.
So there you have it. Paul Heyman and GeekWeek.com are together at last, with wrestlers, mixed martial artists and boxers all in tow. Starting 4th quarter 2010, your dream matches are no longer just the stuff of dreams. It is time, as the man once said, to "walk that aisle."
I'll see you in the ring.
Best,
Jeff Katz
